Overall Report: Team Dirty Work once again staged a fun event to celebrate the end of another year. In addition, the ride served to welcome in the new millenium by starting 2000 out with a long ride in the rough. Approximately 40 riders showed up to register for the event, and this year, for the first time, a fee of $5.00 was collected from participants. This fee was decided on to help pay for liability insurance and in an attempt to put Team Dirty Work's treasury back in the black.
Before the ride, Bulltek Sports raffled off numerous door prizes. So many, in fact, that it seemed everyone there won a door prize.
The ride had a long option or a short option. The long option was more than 30 miles of fun in the dirt, and the short option was 13 miles. The ride began from the Canyon Crest Town Center, climbed Triple R, then Top-of-pole Line, Sewer Point, the X-Trail, Big Ass Drop, Chevron, around the Ammo Dump, the Water Tank, a return to the Chevron, the North Gully Single Track, Top-of-Sycamore, and then the old Sycamore Single Track to exit the dirt on Central. The short riders turned downhill and proceded back to the start point and the long riders turned uphill and did the Box Springs Mountain Loop, with a descent down Two Trees Trail, followed by the return to the start point.
After the ride, numerous participants met at Pappi's for Mexican food, to swill a brewski or two, and to socialize.
No one reported any crashes or mishaps. One rider leader, Dr. Big Bike, managed to flat early-on but his tire was repaired and he was on his way before the lead group was out of sight. (Phylo Windsuck)
Hammer Head Group: Thank goodness not too fast this year. David (aka Alphabet), Guitar Man and Vyktor (me, aka El Presidente) got a late start as we had a late arrival. We managed to catch on to the front riders by the top of 3Rs and take hold of the reigns. From there we headed up to the Sewer Plant were we again regrouped. After a long stop we headed across the X Trail to the Chevron, across the street and up SKR to the Water Tower. Vyktor waited for the last remaining riders that will make up the front group, while Alphabet took them to the top. Here we lost Carrie as she split of :( After a long stop on the top of the Water Tower we flew down where we came head on to a few other riders whom took the wrong route, but all good as they quickly turned around to join us. At the bottom we cruised all the way to the Chevron again as so everyone can slowly catch up. From there Alphabet and Vyktor took the group on the long stretch across Sycamore Park all the way down to the Kiosk in Central. All the riders took this downhill to show of their skills. One more regroup at the bottom and those souls wanting to cut of had a choice here. Our group stayed the same. El Presidente headed up Central and up Boa Road w/o stopping as to split this group into two. At the top the faster group headed out while Rich, Wreck and others tok care of the rest. The faster group headed around the mountain and regroupped at the end of the singletrack. From there we headed up to Two Trees and down. Across UCR and back to the Town Center took care of the rest. All in all great weather and great trail conditions. (El Presidente)
Chuck's Report: Um, sorry, not much to report. I hovered between the middle crowd and back of the pack and eventually slid to the rear pack. RC's account sez it all.The only thing I could add is an incomplete trip around the mountain.Grey-Dog, Rob, myself, Goldfish and the two Daves, (Goode and Scott's buddy)
Made an enthusiastic start for a trip around the mountain. When Rob and myself reached the usual first stop at the old pepper tree we stopped for aregroup. The Grey-Dog was but a distant memory for he had pulled far ahead of us. There were two main elements that sabotaged the remainder of the ride. Rob's rear derailleur cable was hanging on by a few strands and worst of all I started talking about food. 'Fish and Dave n' Dave met up and we almost made it to the start of the singletrack. But between Rob's bad cable and the growling stomachs thanks to my incessant yammering about food we had all the excuses we needed to bail. And bail we did, at mach 5 straight for Pappi's. Anyway, it was a great 20 miles total with great people and then a well deserved lunch of tasty grub at Pappi's.
